Expanded 2012 Edition!
by Kim McCarrel
Riders who travel to Central Oregon for the sunshine and the scenic horse trails have even more to enjoy these days because of the creation of several new riding areas. According to trail guide book author Kim McCarrel, new trails at Peterson Ridge, the Oregon Badlands Wilderness, plus several areas near Sisters and Bend have opened up more riding opportunities for visiting riders and locals alike.
“Central Oregon boasts the highest concentration of horse camps and riding trails in the state,” McCarrel reports, “and the development of these new trails means there are more places to ride than ever.” In researching her newest guide book, an updated and expanded 2012 edition of Riding Central Oregon Horse Trails, McCarrel catalogued over 1,800 miles of equestrian trails in the Bend/Redmond/Sisters/Prineville area. That’s 600 more miles of trail than was identified in the first edition of the book published seven years ago.
“Whether you want to ride in the sagebrush desert, in open ponderosa forest, across ancient lava flows, or among high alpine lakes, Central Oregon has something for all trail riders,” McCarrel says.
Kim McCarrel is author of the popular Oregon Horse Trails series of trail guidebooks, including Oregon Trails and Horse Camps, MORE Oregon Trails and Horse Camps, and Riding Central Oregon Horse Trails. The books are available at your favorite tack or feed store or at www.oregonhorsetrails.com.
