Facility Type: Private Facility
Horse Status: Euthanized
Comments: On March 9th, samples were collected from an 8yo Quarter Horse and sent to the National Veterinary Services Laboratory which confirmed a positive test result for Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) on March 15th, 2023. EIA is an incurable viral disease of horses. This positive animal (index horse) was initially detected by pre-movement testing in order to be transported across state lines. Further investigation of the movements of this horse within the state identified three premises (two in Pinal County and one in Maricopa County) that this animal had resided at in the last 8 months. The other horses at these premises (28 total) that had been exposed to this index horse were also tested for EIA and Equine Piroplasmosis. No further disease detections have been identified and all three premises are under quarantine until a 60 day recheck blood test is performed and all exposed horses test negative again. The positive index horse was humanely euthanized. For more information go to: https://www.equinediseasecc.org/equine-infectious-anemia
