Two magazines and counting for Colorado’s newest regional horse magazine!
When I started on this adventure, the plan was to extend the reach of The Northwest Horse Source to Colorado. We already had a few distribution locations in Colorado, but after surveying the Colorado horse community, it was very apparent that Colorado horse people wanted their own publication. To make this possible, we’ll produce six issues per year for each title. The adventure begins!
My dream when I started The Northwest Horse Source was for a glossy, informative publication like Horse&Rider. The big difference was to focus on a single region with stories and information from experts and horse people in the area. We’ve done this successfully for 25-plus years in the Northwest, and now we’ll replicate that model in Colorado. I’m so excited to have a previous editor-in-chief of Horse&Rider Jennifer Paulson helping us out as editorial director of The Colorado Horse Source!
Editor of the Northwest Horse Source Kim Roe felt it was important to have an editor from Colorado at the helm of our new project. Part of being a regional publication is to be deeply ingrained in the community. Jennifer is a lifelong Colorado resident and deeply passionate about the horse industry here. We are honored to have her onboard. With her direction and experience, just watch what happens. You won’t want to miss a single issue!
The most exciting part of getting to know people in this community is the level of passion for horses and being the best, most responsible horse owners. I am so excited for the next few months and how we will connect horse owners to news, events and the youth riders and trainers in this region. Our membership program is growing, so be sure and join us to save money on clinics, horse care products and more.
We’re in the midst of a few exciting projects including a new social media program, led by Heidi Melocco of Whole-Picture.com; a new promotional video in the works with Beth and Brian Moore of SurfaceFilmProductions.com; and Dana Willett who has supported this effort, helping with a number of projects including an article coming up in this next issue. I’m grateful and so amazed with the generosity of this community.
Please enjoy this next issue, and let us know how we can make it better!

Owner/Publisher Karen’s lifelong love of horses began at a very early age when she wore out a couple of rocking horses before convincing her parents to get her the real thing. That ill-tempered bay gelding, Brandy, was a challenge for the young horsewoman, but it drove her ambition to become a horse trainer. After attending Canyonview Equestrian College’s Horsemanship Program, Karen realized she needed work that was a little more lucrative than training, so she took a job with Customs Brokerage to pay the bills. There, she discovered an affinity for computers and a talent for creating informative, entertaining newsletters. The Northwest Horse Source began as such a letter in December 1995, with a distribution of 1000 copies for its 12 black and white pages. Now 25 years later, it’s an online magazine and website with a reach of over 10,000 per month and growing! Not bad for the results of one woman’s dream to work with horses!
Today, Karen remains involved with every aspect of the magazine and treasures the community of thousands who share a common passion. Now excited to start a version of her original magazine in Colorado!
