Wow, what a year! In April 2021, I packed up and moved 1500 miles from Washington State to Colorado. I was looking for drier weather and a new adventure, and it has been that! I brought our horses over first, and as soon as we hit the Colorado border, in the wee hours of the morning, we hit a blinding snowstorm. Yikes! That’s something I probably will need to get used to. I headed back to Washington (after delivering the horses and living quarters trailer) to move the rest of our home, farm, and business to Colorado. It was quite a drive. Finally, we found our own place after staying with friends and we’re now settled in.
I’m very excited to introduce the first issue of The Colorado Horse Source. The reception from writers and trainers has been great. What a fun and friendly group of horse people there is here in Colorado. I’m grateful for all the help getting connected and I look forward to sharing what I’ve learned in over 25 years of publishing The Northwest Horse Source Magazine (nwhorsesource.com).
The first weekend I got out there was a final series in a ranch sorting competition at Latigo Equestrian Center in Elbert, CO (just 7 miles from our place). I had the privilege to meet Dave Wolfe, president of the RSNC (Ranch Sorting National Championships) and Kris Fiser of Comin’ In Hot Productions (producer of the show series). They were so welcoming and very glad to hear about our new publication!
I’m also grateful for the people who’ve already helped get this publication going. First, Heidi Melocco of Whole-Picture.com, donated many beautiful images for our cover and website. Several local trainers have stepped up and offered to write for us as well. Looking ahead, we will be celebrating clubs and organizations in the state as well.
Our first big event will be our debut at the Rocky Mountain Horse Expo in Denver, February 24-27, 2022.

Owner/Publisher Karen’s lifelong love of horses began at a very early age when she wore out a couple of rocking horses before convincing her parents to get her the real thing. That ill-tempered bay gelding, Brandy, was a challenge for the young horsewoman, but it drove her ambition to become a horse trainer. After attending Canyonview Equestrian College’s Horsemanship Program, Karen realized she needed work that was a little more lucrative than training, so she took a job with Customs Brokerage to pay the bills. There, she discovered an affinity for computers and a talent for creating informative, entertaining newsletters. The Northwest Horse Source began as such a letter in December 1995, with a distribution of 1000 copies for its 12 black and white pages. Now 25 years later, it’s an online magazine and website with a reach of over 10,000 per month and growing! Not bad for the results of one woman’s dream to work with horses!
Today, Karen remains involved with every aspect of the magazine and treasures the community of thousands who share a common passion. Now excited to start a version of her original magazine in Colorado!
